1981 – 1984High SchoolConcentration: Honors programActivities: At Statesboro High School, I was very fortunate that my father, Joseph L. Gufford, Jr., headed up the laboratory studies program for the College of Education at Georgia Southern University. Because of the link between Statesboro High School and Georgia Southern, my dad always knew what I was up to. Because of his guidance, I was able to excel. I started the Army Jr. R.O.T.C program with the help of the officers and NCO's that were assigned to us by the US ARMY. I also started and was the Top Cadet in the Marauders program, which was an elite unit concentrating its efforts in the arena of special forces type training. I also participated in Student Government, Cross Country, Track & Field, Tennis, the Model United Nations, Debate Team. I was the recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution Award and was nominated to attend the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Rhode Island. -
Marvin Pittman Laboratory School
1978 – 1980NoneConcentration: Honors level studiesActivities: Tennis, Track and Field, Band (Yes, I played the Saxophone). I also was the recipient of numerous athletic and academic awards. Most notably, I received the Drama Award for my lead presentation of the Broadway Musical, "Yankee Doodle Dandy ". The experience of learning to act, sing and dance was very rewarding and has helped me throughout my life, both personally and professionally. I am sure that I did not do as well as James's Cagney's portrayal of George M. Cohan, but, it was a lot of fun and did get me out of having to go to my ever so boring English literature class. The best and the worst part of that experience, was having to actually put on the play in a packed auditorium with my friends in the front row making fun of me. But, I powered through it and we presented the play numerous times. The more times I presented the play, the more confident I became.
